Shark Bites live: USCB baseball vs. Montreat College

Sorry for the late start, folks, but we're up and running now for USCB's doubleheader against Montreat College.

Game 1 is under way, with Montreat jumping out to a 2-0 lead with a pair of unearned runs in the top of the first. The Sand Sharks managed a couple of walks, but nothing more, in the bottom half against right-hander Patrick Ballew, who apparently attracted scouts from the Atlanta Braves and Washington Nationals organizations to the ballpark today.

Here are the Game 1 lineups:

MONTREAT (2-1)
Lucas Martin CF
Chris Allen 2B
Jesse Wise C
Josh Ashton RF
Cam Duckworth LF

USCB women land track/cross country recruit

The USC Beaufort women's track and cross country teams signed a new recruit in James Island High School senior Amy Williams, coach Larry Kimball announced in a release on the school's Web site today.

Williams has been running for only a little more than a year, the release said, but she finished the Class 4-A state championship meet in 20:49 and recently ran a 5K road race in 20:10. She also runs the 1,600- and 3,200-meter races and the 4x800-meter relay for the Trojans' track team.

A beautiful day for baseball ... let's play two

Back at Sand Shark Field for a doubleheader between USC Beaufort and St. Thomas, which took the first game of the series 8-3 on Friday. Judging by the size of the crowd, I'm not sure there's anyone left in cyberspace to follow along today, but I'll blog it out just in case.

Before I could even type in the lineups for you, things went awry for the Sand Sharks. Anthony Angulo poked a three-run home run down the right-field line in the top of the first for a 3-0 St. Thomas lead.

Shark Bites live: USCB baseball vs. St. Thomas

I'm back at the ballpark, where USC Beaufort is about to begin its first Sun Conference game against St. Thomas University. Today's game is the first of a three-game series, which concludes with a doubleheader starting at noon Saturday. The Bobcats are 0-2 after dropping a pair of games to NCAA Division II opponent Lynn University. The Sand Sharks, of course, are 4-0 after doubleheader sweeps of Southern Wesleyan and Voorhees College.

Honors abound -- on and off the field -- for Sand Sharks

Three key pitchers will be absent from USC Beaufort's intrasquad baseball scrimmage Saturday, but that's OK with coach Rick Sofield, because the trio - right-handers Ryan Kroko and Brock Wooten and left-hander Jared Campbell - will be playing in the Sun Conference All-Star Game in Daytona Beach, Fla.

USCB runners wrap up season at national meet

We'll have more in Sunday's paper, but I thought some folks might like to know how the USC Beaufort cross country runners fared at the NAIA National Championships today in Kenosha, Wis.

Former Bluffton High School star Nic Tones was the first Sand Shark across the line, finishing the eight-kilometer race in 27 minutes, 28 seconds, which was good for 242nd place among 331 competitors. John Critchlow, the former cross country skier from Vermont, finished in 28:31, good for 288th place.

Shark Bites: Rankings, rankings, everywhere ... but no love for USCB

All that talk about rankings in my last post, I assumed, would be a precursor to the USC Beaufort men's golf team making its debut in the latest Nike/Golfworld NAIA Coaches Poll, which was released this week.

I guess the word still hasn't gotten out about the Sand Sharks, who won two titles in 13 days, capturing the Wilmington Island Club Intercollegiate and their own J. LIndeberg Sand Shark Classic in successive weeks -- and both against stiff competition.

The coaches not only left USCB out of the top 25, they didn't give the Sand Sharks a single vote. Not one.
