Currently ... Downloading: SpellTower, the next ridiculously addictive mobile game

Try as I might to be on the cutting edge of all things pop culture and technology, sometimes I’m a little late to the party.

And in the case of developer Zach Gage’s insanely addictive word game, SpellTower, my tardiness might have something to with my apathy toward mobile games.

I didn’t play any of the seemingly hundreds of iterations of Angry Birds. Or Temple Run. Or Fruit Ninja. Or Plants vs. Zombies.

I honestly found Words with Friends to be a mind-numbing bore that I often cheated at to win. That’s right. I was Googling words. Deal with it.

As far as I was concerned, my iPhone was reserved strictly for texting, tweeting and taking pictures of my food, and my iPad performed several similarly fun but relatively useless functions and playing games on either device interested me very little.

So, I can’t say, with any certainty, what prompted me to download SpellTower on my iPad two weeks ago, but I guess it was, to borrow a Yiddish expression, bashert.

Within minutes of playing this game, which requires the user to swipe across the screen and combine falling tiles — a la Tetris — to form words, I was hooked. Even the tutorial is fun, instructive and, best of all, brief.

And if you value your productivity, steer clear of the game’s multiplayer mode, which allows you to play against a friend or someone you just want to wow with your expansive vocabulary and manual dexterity.

The game is so addictive that, if you’re anything like me, you’ll find yourself still piecing together words as you drift off to sleep.
