The Town of Hilton Head Island will hold a public meeting at 5 p.m. tomorrow to discuss a proposed traffic signal and crosswalk at William Hilton Parkway, Leamington and the Fresh Market Shoppes.
The meeting will be held in town council chambers at Town Hall, 1 Town Center Court.
Plans will be available for review at the meeting, according to the town. Discussion will include an anticipated construction schedule, new roadway alignment, proposed median closures and openings on William Hilton Parkway, according to a news release.
There is no left-turn in or out of Leamington from William Hilton Parkway, which requires drivers and emergency response personnel to make a U-turn at median crossings in front of Fresh Market Shoppes or the Hargray building.
The project would close the median at those locations and create a new crossing in front of Leamington, with access to Fresh Market Shoppes and the Hargray building. A protected, signalized left-turn would be provided at the new intersection for people to enter and exit the community and the shopping center, improving traffic flow, safety and emergency response, assistant town engineer Jennifer Lyle said.
Several accidents have occurred over the years resulting from drivers trying to make left turns out of the Fresh Market Shoppes, she said.
