Beaufort City Council prepares to start Boundary Street project

Posted in

Beaufort City Council is voting on two motions Tuesday night that would mpve the Boundary Street renovation project forward.
During a 5 p.m. special meeting preceding the regular work session on Tuesday, council will vote on the official agreement for a $12.6 million federal grant and to follow Beaufort County's purchasing policy for the grant.
Beaufort has about $13.7 million in matching local funds and the grant money will go toward some of the initial work such as improving intersections and rights-of-way purchases.
Designs call for a narrower Boundary Street with medians, bike paths, a more pedestrian-friendly sidewalk and plants and trees.
City officials seek state construction permits for the project, and work could begin in fall 2013.
The special meeting will be followed by a work session discussion with representatives from the Lowcountry Economic Alliance about workforce development and projects.
A closed-door executive session will follow for council members to discuss appointments.
