A Sun City Hilton Head man shot himself in the head in the woods in Okatie soon after being reported missing by relatives last week, according to authorities.
After working for nearly a week, medical examiners in Charleston confirmed Friday that a body found this week in woods off Okatie Village Drive was that of David Taylor, 55, who disappeared from his home on Astral Lane on Aug. 2, said Beaufort County Coroner Ed Allen.
Allen said Taylor died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.
The release of Taylor's identity and cause of death was delayed nearly a week as pathologists at the Medical University of South Carolina struggled to identify the body. They had to use dental records and other information to confirm the identity, according to local authorities.
Taylor was last seen at about 11 p.m. Aug. 2 when he was reported missing from his home, according to authorities.
The Beaufort County Sheriff's Office said it was notified of Taylor's disappearance the night of Aug. 4.
Investigators do not suspect foul play and do not believe Taylor was in danger at the time of his disappearance, a Sheriff's Office spokeswoman has said.
Taylor was a native of Gainesville, Ga., and was a former Marine, according to his obituary.
He most recently worked as a local sales representative for Glidden Paints, the obituary said.
