Some elementary schools in the district will have new visitors today.

Deputies who are part of a new School Resource Officer program aimed at young kids will be dropping in.

The 16 deputies chosen to participate went through an intensive training Monday to prepare them for their new roles. Instead of being posted at a particular school, the new SROs will float around the district during their regular shifts.

More than a million South Carolinians will hit the roads this holiday — making Dec. 22 through Jan. 1 one of the deadliest travel times of the year, according to AAA Carolinas.

In 2010-2011, the last year that data is available, 68 people died on South Carolina roads during the holidays. This averages to 6.2 fatalities per day — nearly three times higher than the daily average of 2.2 traffic fatalities during the rest of the year, a news release said.

The Bluffton Township Fire District will present a check to benefit a 7-year-old leukemia patient at noon Wednesday at Station 35 on U.S. 278.

The money was raised during the fire district’s annual Boston Butts Fundraiser. This year the money will offset expenses for the family of 7-year-old Leo Vannoni, diagnosed with leukemia this summer and currently being treated at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston. Leo’s mother, Kelly, is a teacher at H.E. McCracken Middle School and has had to take off from work to care for him.
