More than 2,000 teachers and staff from the Beaufort County School District gathered Thursday to gear up for the new school year, which starts Monday.
The annual back-to-school rally, in its fifth year, included guest speakers from the S.C. Chamber of Commerce.
“Many people think South Carolina is 49th where education is concerned, but they’re wrong,” said Jim Reynolds, the chamber’s board chairman. “We’re actually 37th and moving up. We have pockets of light all across this state, and we have to let people know about it.”
This isn't the first time Beaufort High School teacher Todd Stowe and his photography club students have sent a balloon festooned with camera equipment into the atmosphere — the club launched one this past May and scored about 1,000 images.
This week, Stowe and company were at it again, this time with a bigger balloon.
