The Beaufort County Board of Education meets in public session at 6 p.m. April 6 in the Beaufort County Council Chambers. The board will meet in a closed, executive session to discuss legal issues at 5 p.m.

The Beaufort County Board of Education meets at 6 p.m. March 16 in public session in the Beaufort County Council Chambers. A closed, executive session will begin at 5 p.m. and the board's minority contractor committee will meet at 4 p.m.

TCL recognizes top staff members
The Technical College of the Lowcountry recently named three faculty and staff members as 2010 South Carolina Technical Education Association Educators of the Year.
• Libby R. DeLoach, cosmetology instructor, was named faculty member of the year.
• Pat Irwin, director of grant administration, was named administrator of the year.
• Latesha McComas, personnel assistant, was named support staff member of the year.
Winners were chosen by fellow employees at the college and were recognized at the annual SCTEA conference in Myrtle Beach in February.

The board will discuss a request to expand Riverview Charter School and approve colors and a mascot for the new Pritchardville Elementary School, according to the agenda.

Battery Creek alumni organize fundraiser for Haiti
Reunion events for the Battery Creek High School class of 1989 will become fundraisers to support relief efforts in Haiti, according to a news release.
All alumni from Battery Creek, Beaufort and Robert Smalls high schools are invited to two events next week.

Local school board chairman asks state to do more for children
Fred Washington Jr., chairman of the Beaufort County Board of Education, thinks state agencies that serve at-risk children and their families should be reformed to better prepare young children for public schools.
