County high schools register almost 300 new voters
A group of newly registered voters at Beaufort High School enjoyed ice cream sundaes Thursday, a reward for winning a voter registration contest held for the county’s public high schools.
Student leaders from the four high schools, with help from the League of Women Voters, were asked to register as many eligible students as they could in a five-week period. Eligible students must be 18 by the November general election.

Superintendent weighs in on discipline, teacher morale, other issues
An e-mail sent by Bluffton High School science teacher Mike Sanz to nearly all employees in the Beaufort County School District and circulated throughout the community this month raised questions about the quality of education in local public schools.
Superintendent Valerie Truesdale declined this week to comment directly on the e-mail, but she agreed to discuss some of issues that have been raised.

School board releases agenda for May 18 meeting
The Beaufort County Board of Education will meet in public session at 6 p.m. May 18 in the Beaufort County Council Chambers.
Michael Fanning, director of the Olde English Consortium, will speak to the board about the state system of funding public education. Fanning's group, based in Rock Hill, seeks to promote education in South Carolina. His presentation will be called "Is the State Broke or Is the System Broken?"

New Riverview director to meet with community, board today
The Riverview Charter School board of directors will participate in three events at the school May 17:
• At 6 p.m., the board will attend a meeting of the Riverview Community Cooperative to introduce the school's new director, Wendy Randle, to the community.
• The board will meet in executive session at 7 p.m. to to discuss a personnel matter involving goal-setting and professional development for a specific employee.
• The board will then meet to prepare for Thursday's enrollment lottery.

The Beaufort County Board of Education's audit committee will meet at 4 p.m. May 18 in the Beaufort County Council executive conference room to discuss an internal audit for the 2010-11 school year.

School board to hold special meeting May 10
The Beaufort County Board of Education will hold a special meeting May 10 to discuss the board’s agreement with the federal Office for Civil Rights and standardization of contractual workdays.
The meeting might begin with a closed session but the board will move to open session, chairman Fred Washington Jr. said.

School board releases agenda for weekend work session
The Beaufort County Board of Education will meet April 23 and April 24 for a weekend work session. Friday's session begins at 8:30 a.m. at the Hilton Head Island Early Childhood Center. Saturday's session begins at 8:30 a.m. at the District Educational Services Center in Beaufort.
