Beaufort High teacher nominated for state award
Jeremiah Young, a teacher at Beaufort High School, is one of three finalists from South Carolina competing for the inaugural Teacher of the Year award from the nonprofit American Board for Certification of Teacher Excellence.
An online, public vote will determine state-level winners. Anyone can vote at www.abcte.org/teacher-of-the-year. Voting ends at 5 p.m. July 29.

TCL announces time management, interior design classes
The Technical College of the Lowcountry division of continuing education announced Friday a time management course and a series of interior design classes:
“It’s about Time: Ways to Optimize Your Time for a Well-Balanced Life” will be from 6 to 8:30 p.m. July 14 at the TCL Beaufort campus, 921 Ribaut Road. Cost is $39.

The Beaufort County Board of Education will meet in public session at 6 p.m. July 6 in the Beaufort County Council Chambers, 100 Ribaut Road in Beaufort.

School district awards banking contract to First Citizens
The Beaufort County School District has awarded a contract for banking services to First Citizens Bank, the bank announced Thursday in a news release.
Services provided will include online banking, direct deposit, positive pay and Public Insured Money Markets, according to the release. The contract with First Citizens represents approximately $16,000 in annual cash management and deposit fees, and $17 million in cash balances.
The three-year contract begins July 1, according to a contract summary from the school district. The contract also allows for up to two one-year renewals.

Former schools chief Nielsen endorses Mick Zais
Former state superintendent of education Barbara Nielsen has endorsed Mick Zais in his bid for the Republican nomination for state superintendent of education, his campaign announced Monday.
Nielsen, a Beaufort County resident, served two terms as state superintendent, from 1990-98. She is the only Republican to have been elected to the office.
Nielsen said in a news release she is proud to support Zais.
