Beaufort County School District scores on a key achievement measure continued to improve this year, but local pass rates still lag state averages on most of the tests.

District scores exceeded state averages on 11 of the 30 examinations that comprised the Palmetto Assessment of State Standards in 2010, according to results released Friday by the S.C. Department of Education.

That’s an improvement from 2009, when county students outperformed the state in just seven areas.

TCL to offer Shag classes

The Technical College of the Lowcountry division of continuing education will offer Shag dance classes from 6:30 to 7:45 p.m. Tuesdays, Sept. 7-28, at the Beaufort County YMCA in Port Royal. Cost is $89 per couple, and students must register as a couple.

The class will be led by Woody Oakley, who will teach the basic steps of the South Carolina state dance. Dancers should wear comfortable clothing and flat shoes.

TCL to offer sewing class for beginners

The Technical College of the Lowcountry division of continuing education will offer “Sewing 101” from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesdays, Aug. 24 through Sept. 14, at the Beaufort campus. Cost is $79.

Participants will learn the basics of the sewing machine and various techniques and complete a sewing project of choice, according to a TCL news release. The class will be led by Sharon P. Holmes, a native of Saint Helena Island and owner of a local sewing business.

TCL receives unique industrial sculpture

An industrial sculpture of an eagle with outstretched wings is one of the newest additions to the Technical College of the Lowcountry’s Teaching Collection.

The piece was donated by JCB’s North American headquarters in Savannah, according to a news release from the college. The company is the third-largest heavy equipment manufacturer in the world.

School district posts letter to attorney general

The Beaufort County School District has posted on its website a letter to the S.C. Attorney General requesting an opinion on County Council’s authority over the school district operating budget.

The letter, signed by chairman Fred Washington Jr., asks the attorney general to consider the propriety and validity of the school budget ordinance adopted by council last month.

School board releases agenda for July weekend work session

The Beaufort County Board of Education will meet Friday and Saturday, July 23-24, in the District Educational Services Center on Mink Point Boulevard in Beaufort for its annual summer work session. Both sessions begin at 9 a.m. and are scheduled to continue through the afternoon.

The Beaufort County Board of Education will hear the Riverview Charter School's annual report, consider step-pay increases for district teachers and revisit a motion to work with the Beaufort County Council and Legislative Delegation concerning Act 388 and EFA funding during its meeting at 5 p.m. Tuesday, July 20. The meeting will be in Beaufort County Council Chambers in the county administration building on Ribaut Road.

TCL to offer pet care courses

The Technical College of the Lowcountry division of continuing education will offer a series of classes on caring for pets. Classes include introduction to dog grooming, pet obedience and pet first aid.
