ACE to host fourth-graders for career fair
The Beaufort-Jasper Academy for Career Excellence will host more than 900 students from local schools at its annual Fourth-Grade Career Carnival this week and next.
The Education and Economic Development Act of 2005 mandates elementary school students be exposed to different career opportunities, said Geri Henderson, a school-to-career director for ACE.
The EEDA law is designed to give South Carolina students the tools they need to build successful careers, including career and technical courses.

School board releases agenda for annual fall retreat
The Beaufort County Board of Education will meet Oct. 30 and 31 in the district office board room at 1300 King St. in Beaufort for its annual fall retreat.
The two-day retreat includes a performance evaluation of superintendent Valerie Truesdale, discussion of school attendance boundaries, discussion of the district's desegregation agreement with the federal Office for Civil Rights and a discussion of budget priorities for fiscal 2011.

School board members hear audit on purchasing card controls
The Beaufort County School District should improve internal safeguards and regularly monitor transactions to protect itself from fraudulent purchases on company charge cards, the district’s internal auditor told the Board of Education’s audit committee last week.
Anthony Baxter reported the purchasing card, or P-Card, approach to buying goods is quickly replacing purchase orders. P-Card transactions take less time and cost less to process, he said.

School board to hear accreditation report Oct. 14
A team of 12 educators from across the nation are visiting county schools this week to evaluate whether the Beaufort County School District meets national quality standards.
The district is pursuing accreditation through AdvancED and the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. SACS has merged with other regional accrediting bodies to provide national accreditation, superintendent Valerie Truesdale said.
The accreditation team will report its recommendations to the Board of Education and interested residents at 3 p.m. Wednesday in the district office.

The board for the Beaufort-Jasper Academy for Career Excellence will meet at 5:30 p.m. Oct. 15 in the auditorium of the academy to discuss plans for school renovations and personnel matters.

TCL awards $20,700 in scholarships
The Technical College of the Lowcountry Foundation recently awarded more than $20,700 in scholarships to assist 38 students with tuition and books for the fall semester.
The TCL Foundation has awarded more than $1.4 million in scholarships since its founding in 1983.

Board adopts proposal for superintendent goals, takes other action Tuesday
Superintendent Valerie Truesdale must narrow the gap between test scores in Beaufort County and the state averages by the end of the school year to earn her full annual bonus, according to a list of goals adopted by the Beaufort County Board of Education on Tuesday.
The board unanimously adopted a goals proposal developed by a committee of school board members earlier this month. Truesdale must ensure the Beaufort County School District matches the state average on at least 75 percent of 30 measures of academic performance outlined by the committee.
