  • Our sun is always warm: Today is supposed teeth-chattering cold here in the Lowcountry. But Arno Dimmling's photo of the sun rising Wednesday morning on Pine Island at Dolphin Head in Hilton Head Plantation reminds us that we always have a warming sun.

My brother shares this on Friday:

    Quote:
A friend from work who has retired is spending some time in his native Minnesota. He e-mailed this poem this morning:

  • No professionals allowed on beach: The Charleston City Paper tells how the Isle of Palms is breaking hearts by banning vendors -
  • like professional photographers - from working on the beach.

That's a big deal for brides planning beach weddings.

Maybe they could at least let 'em eat cake. If Mama made it.

  • Cough up the money: A reader responds via e-mail to today's column with a personal story on health care:

I agree with the article that something has to be done with our health care system and health care insurance coverage.

I am a 55 year old woman, picture of health, athletic, works out daily, size 6-8, eats healthy, I do not smoke and very health oriented.

  • Even in Sea Pines? Well, if that's the case, the Hampton County Guardian knows just where you can find your very own brand new, custom-built Outhouse.

Editor Michael M. DeWitt Jr. has the tongue-in-cheek story about the business in the Lowcountry's own Varnville, home of the late and lamented Varnville Pool, that builds, sells and delivers Outhouses.

  • Oh, they have barbecue in North Carolina? The Charleston City Paper has a nice review of a juicy new barbecue book, Holy Smoke.

Its by John Shelton Reed and his wife, Dale Volberg Reed, with William McKinney.

On the wings of an Angel: Charleston County's giant Angel Oak may soon get new neighbors - a lot of neighbors. But, as the The Charleston City Paper reports, "Last-minute petitions look to stall Johns Island development" that would place a 600-unit Angel Oak Village on 21 acres near the popular oak.

  • "The Healthy Skeptic": I wrote a column about this book recently, and thought you might like to see this article about it in The Atlanta Journal Constitution:

Author takes aim at dark chocolate and other medical claims

The author is a son of Hilton Head Islander Scottie Davis.

  • Evacuation stress: Working on today's column - "Hanna stressing you out? You're not alone" - while also making reservations for my wife and pets at a POINT SOUTH motel (is that dumb?), it occurred to me to ask for some real evacuation advice.
