What to do if you think your SSN might have been stolen from SC Department of Revenue

A massive security breach of the S.C. Department of Revenue Friday resulted in the theft of about 3.6 million Social Security Numbers.

Was your's stolen? Here's how to check:

First, you should know you could be at risk if you've filed state income taxes in South Carolina since 1998. This includes people who no longer live here so warn friends and family who have moved away.

To find out if your SSN was compromised, call 1-866-578-5422.

Reminder: Red Cross app could aid loved ones during Sandy

If you know someone who might be affected by Hurricane Sandy, there's a Red Cross app that could help them keep in touch with loved ones and get themselves out of harm's way.

We wrote about the app in August but here's a quick list of the app's uses that could be helpful as the storm approaches:

New FBI games show kids cellphone, Internet safety

A free program designed to help third to eighth grade children learn technology safety skills through interactive games and online tests launched by the FBI last week.

The “FBI Cyber Surf Islands,” presents players with common situations, such as Internet bullying or copy right laws, and ask them to decide what to do. Correct answers help them advance through the seven levels of each of the six islands.

Pro Publica launches nursing home inspection database

Pro Publica has created a searchable database for inspection reports of nursing homes across the country.

The site has more than 25,000 reports. The severity of violations is rated on a scale of A to L.

Wilderness Cove Apartments robbery suspect:

Beaufort Police are searching for a suspect who on Monday robbed an office clerk at the Wilderness Cove Apartment Complex in Beaufort. The suspect, a black male in his late twenties, asked for an application from the desk attendant around 4 p.m. The suspect left, then came back 20 minutes later with a semi automatic pistol, according to news release from the Beaufort Police. He stole jewelry and an undisclosed amount of money from the attendant and left on foot.

Public meeting: "Crime on St. Helena Island"

A meeting to discuss recent criminal activity and law enforcement tactics on St. Helena Island will be hosted by Beaufort County Sheriff P.J. Tanner and Fourteenth Circuit Solicitor Duffie Stone. It's open to the public but residents of St. Helena Island are particularly urged to attend.

County Health rankings -- we're no. 1!

Good job, Beaufort County! According to a study done by the University of Wisconsin Population Health Institute and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, our county is the healthiest in the state.

CountyHealthRankings.org looks at a list factors including smoking, teen pregnancy, low birthweight, high school and/or college graduation, violent crime and access to healthy food.
