U.S. Department of Justice signs off on S.C. Congressional redistricting plan

The federal Department of Justice, which vets new district lines in South Carolina under the 1965 Voting Rights Act, has signed off on a plan for U.S. Congressional District lines.

“The attorney general does not interpose any objection to the specified change,” wrote Assistant U.S. Attorney Thomas Perez in a letter to statehouse leaders, according to the Associated Press.

That doesn’t necessarily mean the plan is past legal challenge, but it’s a big step forward.
