Questions for a chef - Mark Gaylord of the Jazz Corner

The Jazz Corner celebrates its 10th anniversary March 30, and while its reputation is rooted in the music, the club has established itself in the local culinary scene, as well.
Chef Mark Gaylord started in September after working extensively in Lowcountry restaurants such as Savannah’s Olde Pink House and Charleston’s Anson.

Wings! Wings! Wings!
WingFest
When: 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday (March 21)
Where: Shelter Cove Community Park
Cost: $5 admission. Tickets purchase wings. A roll of 10 tickets is $10.
Menu: Fifteen restaurants and amateurs slathering up wings with their special glazes, including Street Meet’s chicken and waffles, Kenny B’s jambalaya wing with creole marinade and islander Sally Kerr-Dineen’s sweet and tangy barbecue wing.

All-you-can-eat barbecue
The Omar Shrine Center is bringing one of its annual Smoke on the Beach barbecue competitions to Honey Horn Friday at Saturday (March 20-21).
The Anything Goes Event features samples of barbecued chicken, fish, beef and more from 6 to 11 p.m. Friday. Samples are $1.
Saturday is a barbecue extravaganza from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tickets are $10 for unlimited tastings.
Parking is $5.

Scenes from Wine and Food Fest

The foreboding clouds didn't hold off the legions of people who attended the Hilton Head Island Wine and Food Festival Saturday.
The event was beefed up this year, a combination of the best elements from the Wine and Food fests of the past. Organizers said they expected turnout on par with previous years, meaning 5,000-plus roamed the spacious Honey Horn.

Gullah cooking with Sallie Ann Robinson

Sallie Ann Robinson grew up on Daufuskie Island picking meat from freshly captured crabs, tending the vegetable garden, slopping the hogs, hand pumping cool water from the well and cutting timber for the stove.
If she wanted to eat, she had to work. She had to learn to cook, too. The reason was different depending on who you asked.
