    In Sunday’s paper, I explore issues surrounding contaminated rivers in Beaufort and Jasper counties — what’s impaired, who’s responsible for cleaning them up and the oddities of the process. (Thirty-seven rivers and creeks in Beaufort and Jasper are on the S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control’s list of impaired waterways, by the way.)

    After hearing the story of a local family whose seizure-alert dog was euthanized after spending six days in a county shelter, Okatie Elementary School wanted to help.
    The school is hosting a fundraiser Friday to raise money for organizations that help families find service dogs.

    May River documentary premieres Friday
    Longtime Bluffton resident Greg Smith is unveiling a 23-minute multimedia presentation at 7 p.m. Friday at ARTworks in Beaufort Town Center.
    “Keeping the May River Wild” features hundreds of still images, audio from the river and interviews with people working to save the waterway.
