After a $5 million renovation, Hilton Head Island’s Holiday Inn Resort — now The Beach House, 1 South Forest Beach Drive — will once again be the site of a free community Christmas dinner.
Dinner organizers said Tuesday they’re grateful to have the venue back for the 10th annual buffet dinner, which will be from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Dec. 25.
“No one should be alone on Christmas,” said co-organizer and Bluffton resident Lois Willig. “This is for the homeless to people who can afford a meal but wish to have a traditional, family Christmas dinner.”
Last year’s dinner was at Aunt Chiladas Easy Street Cafe at 69 Pope Ave.
“There was a lot of finagling. It was tight, but we were able to pull it off thanks to their generosity,” Willig said. “It will be nice to return to our old venue, though, which is tried and true.”
Free-will offerings by guests go to Meals on Wheels or Second Helpings, a local charity that picks up extra food from restaurants and grocery stores to distribute to the needy.
Nearly 400 volunteers provide food to an expected 1,000 diners from Bluffton, Hilton Head and visitors, Willig said.
Reservations are encouraged to help volunteers prepare and serve food, while avoiding long waits, she said.
“This meal just keeps growing and growing,” Willig said.

“We appreciate the community’s support toward the costs of the dinner and the donations of our guests,” Willig said, adding that a post office box will be set up in November to accept contributions.
