Orchid Paulmeier of One Hot Mama's and The Lodge was close to becoming a Food Network Star. And she still might make it on TV yet.
I spoke to Orchid yesterday at the premier party for her new show on WHHI. The Restaurant Show features Orchid interviewing local chefs about what they make and how they make it. Check out a few clips here.
"It's a great opportunity to get out there and enjoy being a foodie," she said.
The local show is just one instance of how Orchid is continuing to keep her name out there in recent months. She got voted off Food Network Star before the finals last year, denying her a chance for her own show on the network. But she's riding the fame she did generate across the country and perhaps back onto a national network. She said she's working on a pilot for the Cooking Channel that will pair interesting food with craft beer.
"People are really getting into craft beer these days," she said. "They like good food and good beer. So I thought I'd find a way to combine the two."
She's also been appearing at different conventions and cooking shows across the country. She'll be at the Savannah Asian Festival this weekend and her appearance has generated plenty of interest. Also, she made the trek earlier this month to England for the Queen's Diamond Jubilee with members of the Hilton Head Island-Bluffton Chamber of Commerce. She was briefly on camera when chamber members joined Al Roker for a toast on the Today show.
"That was crazy," she said with a laugh. "I mean, Al Roker was right there. I couldn't believe it."
