The service is provided by Nixle, a nonprofit company that provides communication services to law enforcement agencies for free.
To sign up for alerts in the lower part of the state, send a text message to 888777 and write HPLOWSTATE in the body of the message.
The lower part of the state is from Aiken to Myrtle Beach south to Beaufort and Jasper Counties, said spokesman Cpl. Bob Beres.
