Award-winning barbecue chef opens restaurant in Okatie

In talking to folks for my story next week about the new High on the Hog BBQ Festival on Lady's Island (June 8 and 9), I caught up with local barbecue champ Michael Harmon today. His team, Palmetto Smokehouse, came in third earlier this year at the S.C. Barbeque Association state championships. Now, he's branched out into the restaurant business.

Palmetto Smokehouse restaurant opened April 2 off S.C. 170 in Hazard Creek Village (near Spring Island). The menu features Harmon's trademark ribs and barbecue along with chicken, wings, burgers, rib eye and plenty of Southern cookout sides like collard greens, mac and cheese and baked beans. Check out the full menu here.

Also, read our story about Harmon here. He's quite the character in his own right.
