We'll have a full story on this in tomorrow's edition of The Island Packet and The Beaufort Gazette, but I wanted to let you all know that Jerry Faulkner has been named the new boys basketball coach at Hilton Head Prep.
Athletics director Rich Basirico made the official announcement today, as Faulkner will replace Bob Sulek as coach of the Dolphins. Sulek, who came to the boys after a successful run with the girls team, resigned earlier this month after going just 4-23 in his only season at the helm.
Faulkner, if you remember, spent a few seasons as the junior varsity and varsity coach at Hilton Head Christian Academy. He resigned in September 2010 after health concerns arose, but he told me that he is once again feeling good.
Basirico said Faulkner, who has compiled over 700 victories in more than three decades as a head coach, was his first choice to replace Sulek. He approached the former Clemson assistant about the position some time ago before Faulkner accepted the job last week.
"I knew I still had a passion for the game, but I didn't know if I ever wanted to coach again," Faulkner said. "It really wasn't in the cards. I wasn't considering it until I got the call from Rich and I told him I'd think about it."
Steve Graham has also been named coach of the volleyball team, Basirico said. Graham -- who spent last season as the JV coach -- replaces Reed Goldsmith, whose family moved to Oregon after last season's conclusion.
As for the football and girls basketball positions, Basirico said he hoped to have a replacement for Tara Dakolios named in the coming days while the football job search will likely wrap up next week. As always, stay tuned to The Island Packet for updates on those two hires. You can also follow me on Twitter @matchpointbft.
