Sports reporter Stephen Fastenau primarily covers Beaufort schools and recreation. He started at The Beaufort Gazette/The Island Packet in April 2010 after two years as a sports reporter in Augusta, Ga. Fastenau graduated from the University of South Carolina. | Beaufort High School defensive coordinator Jerry Hatcher was fired Wednesday after eight seasons with the Eagles.
Eagles head coach Mark Clifford told Hatcher on Wednesday the coordinator's job had been offered to a coach outside the program. Clifford said he is still in talks with two coaches about the job and hoped to have the staff finalized by March 1.
Hatcher said he would stay in Beaufort County and plans to apply for the Whale Branch High School head football opening. He was a finalist for the Battery Creek head football job last year.
