Town eyes on-street parking, improvements for Mathews Drive side streets

The Town of Hilton Head will hold a public meeting at 5 p.m. Wednesday, March 23 in Palmetto Electric Cooperative’s Community Room, 111 Mathews Drive, to discuss the rehabilitation of Mingo Way, Electric Avenue, Cooperative Way and Thompson Street.

Town officials will discuss future on-street parking, as well as parking easements for the streets and Oak Park Drive.

Those unable to attend should contact Jennifer Lyle at jenniferl@hiltonheadisland.gov or 843-341-4779 for more information.

Lyle said the meeting is intended to gather input from property owners in the area about the location, character and extent of the proposed street work. The project includes replacing crushed gravel and deteriorating pavement with new asphalt or permeable pavers and installing drainage inlets.

The town purchased the streets from private interests three or four years ago as part of a larger initiative to improve the Mathews Drive area.

Lyle said staff plan to go before the town’s Planning Commission in May or June with a project proposal before seeking final approval from Town Council.
