Once again, Edwin McCain is coming home — sort of. McCain hails from the upstate these days, but said that he considers Hilton Head Island the place where he finally made it as a musician.
“Basically, I got my start in Hilton Head,” McCain said.
The singer recalls many a night spent at island nightspots like Daddy Zacks, the Tiki Hut, Sneakers and the Wild Wing Cafe, where he returns this weekend to headline the venue’s annual Wingstock and help it celebrate its 20th anniversary.
Indeed, those hundreds of Hilton Head shows helped lay the groundwork for the success that would come later in the ’90s. McCain first scored a top 10 hit with “I’ll Be” in 1997, followed by the top 40 hit “I Could Not Ask For More” in 1999.
In 2005, “I’ll Be” was voted the best wedding song by more than a million viewers of the “Dr. Phil” show, a stat that McCain proudly boasts about on his website.
