Shark Bites Rewind: USCB 14, Shorter College 3

Posted in

As you die-hard fans probably know by now, the Sand Sharks opened their 2010 baseball season today with a 14-3 win against visiting Shorter College. I'm going to make it a habit of making this my first stop after covering a game and give you an instant analysis to rehash the day's events and set the stage for the next game.

Of course, there will always be more to read in the next day's paper, but I hope to give you enough to keep you scrambling back here after the game to read my thoughts. I'll try to come up with a formula and stick to it, but I might tweak it a bit early in the season until I settle on something I like.

Here goes:

SHARK BITES REWIND

Today's score: USCB 14, Shorter College 3

USCB's record: 1-0

Turning point: With two outs in the bottom of the second, David O'Neil's RBI single and Zach Rossetti's two-run double keyed a rally to give USCB a 4-3 lead, and the Sand Sharks cruised from there.

Three stars: 1. Spencer Cromer -- winning pitcher threw five scoreless innings of relief, allowing two hits, walking none and striking out five; 2. Spencer Jackson -- left fielder went 2-for-4 with a three-run home run and a double, drew a walk and scored three runs; 3. Zach Rossetti -- third baseman made several sparkling plays at the hot corner and went 2-for-5 with a two-run double.

Looking ahead: The Sand Sharks hit the road for a noon doubleheader at Voorhees College on Tuesday. Jared Campbell and Kyle McCullough are expected to be the starting pitchers for USCB.

That will do it for today's wrap-up. Check out tomorrow's paper for more, and we'll see you next time.
