IN THEATERS

Out today is the drama/tear-jerker “Dear John.” Channing Tatum and Amanda Seyfried star as John and Savannah, two star-crossed lovers who meet while he is home on leave from the military. After he is deployed back to war, the two begin to exchange letters in hopes of keeping the spark alive.

OK, so you know the rest of this story. And anyone dying to see it probably already read the Nicholas Sparks book on which the movie is based. To me personally, this looks like the sequel to “The Notebook,” but an inferior one at that. It all just feels a little tired at this point. We’ve been down this road! But never will you stop Hollywood from cashing in on potential blockbusters.

It’s cool that these Sparks novels are giving so many shout-outs to South Carolina considering this one was shot mainly in Charleston. But other than some cool cinematography of the South Carolina coast, what are we working with here? It’s not gonna top “The Notebook,” and reviews aren’t looking great. But for those teenage girls that love “love,” it would take more armed soldiers than were used in this movie to stop them from seeing it.

So I say, go for it ladies. It might be every guy’s worst nightmare come true to be subjected to this type of fare on a Friday night, but we all know that young ladies eat it up. The movie’s success is undoubtedly resting on your shoulders to see it. No doubt tears will flow and tissues will be drawn, but that’s kind of the point.

So other than the local connection, what are people’s thoughts about this one? Are you intrigued or simply rolling your eyes?

ON DVD

Out this week on video is the horror/comedy/spoof “Zombieland.” Columbus (Jesse Eisenberg) is trying to survive in a world that has been overrun with man-eating zombies. So now he and a few remaining people band together to try and end the chaos. It also stars Woody Harrelson, Emma Stone and Abigail Breslin.

This movie was ridiculous — so over the top. But with that said, it was also a really good time. If you’re a fan of the horror/spoof movies that almost always seem to include zombies, then you should find some amusement with this one. It’s heavy on the sarcastic comedy and really heavy on the blood and guts as zombies kill humans and then are dispensed themselves.

Don’t take any of it as a serious movie, as you will quickly learn in the opening credits, sit back, have a few drinks and enjoy. It’s nothing that will stretch your mind, but it’s a fun ride to take.

With these Zombie movies that have been coming out lately, where do people stand with them? Is it still good fun to you or has it long since been played out?
