Sand Shark golf teams earn high preseason rankings

If the first official NAIA rankings of the season are any indication, it's going to be quite a showdown for the Sun Conference men's and women's golf titles this spring, and both USC Beaufort teams should be right in the mix.

USCB's men are ranked third nationally in the top 25 coaches poll released Friday — and the Sand Sharks aren't even the highest-ranked team in the conference. That distinction belongs to Savannah College of Art and Design, which is ranked second behind Oklahoma City University, the unanimous No. 1 team receiving all 19 first-place votes from a panel of coaches. New Sun Conference member Johnson and Wales is No. 4, Northwood is No. 16, and St. Thomas is No. 18, giving the Sun Conference five teams in the men's top 25.

The Sand Shark women came in at No. 13 nationally, but they're only the fourth-highest ranked team in the conference. Embry-Riddle heads the list at No. 2, followed by Northwood at No. 4 and SCAD at No. 7. Webber International also made the top 25 at No. 22.

Both USCB teams open the spring season Feb. 8-9 at Webber Internaitonal's Start 2 Finish Sports and More Classic in Lake Wales, Fla.
