Mose Allison's road: The Jazz Corner, and a new album in March

Posted in

Mose Allison, the “Sage of Tippo, Miss.,” returns to the Jazz Corner on Hilton Head Island for what’s becoming  regular December engagement this weekend.

Over a career that’s spanned decades, Allison’s songs have served not only as jazz classics but broken the walls of the genre entirely; songs like “Everybody’s Cryin’ Mercy,” have been covered by everyone from Bonnie Raitt to Elvis Costello, and other Allison tracks have been recorded by an eclectic group of that includes Van Morrison, the Who, the Clash and the Yardbirds.

But this year’s concert comes with additional good news, as Allison announced last month that his first new studio record in 12 years, “The Way of the World,” will be released in March 2010.

Allison said last week that the record was produced and conceived by singer, guitarist and producer Joe Henry, who pitched him the idea during a concert in Germany a few years ago (Henry writes on his blog that he spent “nearly a year” trying to convince Allison to join him in his Garfield House studio).

The album will be released on the Anti- label, the current home of artists like Tom Waits, Neko Case, the Swell Season, Bettye LaVette and many more. It’ll include 12 tracks, mostly new compositions and a few of what Allison called reworked older tracks and his first-ever duet with his daughter, Amy.
mose’s history

Allison was born in the town of Tippo in the Mississippi Delta, quite a few miles from just about anywhere, and it was there that Allison’s grandfather ran the farm on which Allison was born.

Allison’s current shows are marked by a keen ear and a willingness to leave notes unplayed. Allison’s rapport with his bandmates lends both security and spontaneity to each performance. Even at 82, Allison can blaze through a boogie number one minute and slay you with a ballad the next. And he still hasn’t compromised on any of his political or social commentary.
