Local talent shines in HHSO Christmas show
The Hilton Head Symphony Orchestra welcomes the holiday season on Monday in a concert full of lighthearted traditional favorites headed by music director and conductor Mary Woodmansee Green.
The concert will feature Hilton Head soprano Laura Sutton Floyd, joined by the Hilton Head Symphony Orchestra Chorus, who will open and close the program with seasonal favorites. Additionally, Micah McLauren, winner of the 2009 Hilton Head Youth Orchestra Concerto Competition, will perform the finale of Saint-SaĆ«ns’ dazzling second Piano Concerto.

Also on the program will be Handel’s “Let the Bright Seraphim” from his “Samson”; Elie Siegmeister’s “Christmas is Coming: A Festive Cantata”; and selections from Gian Carlo Menotti’s “Amahl and the Night Visitors.”
Floyd first appeared with the Symphony Orchestra in 1999. Since then she has been a frequent soloist with the orchestra, most recently appearing in the group’s 2008 performance of Orff’s “Carmina Burana.” She also appears with Chamber Music Hilton Head and has a small private voice studio.
McLauren, a home-schooled student now in the eighth grade, is the third oldest of seven children. He has studied piano for more that five years, now under Enrique Graf at the Charleston Academy of Music. He won second place in the 2008 International Institute of Young Musicians International Piano Competition in Lawrence, Kan.
