USCB baseball garnering more attention heading into second season
A year ago, USC Beaufort did not register on the NAIA baseball radar, and understandably so. The Sand Sharks had never played a game and represented a wholly unknown quantity.
After a 33-21 campaign in their inaugural season, which included a fourth-place finish in the Sun Conference, the Sand Sharks are a blip on the radar this year -- a small blip, but a blip nonetheless.
USCB received one vote for the preseason top 25 poll, essentially putting the Sand Sharks in a tie for 46th in the poll. USCB also is ranked fourth in the Sun Conference in the preseason, behind Embry-Riddle, Warner and Savannah College of Art and Design. Embry-Riddle is ranked seventh in the nation, with Warner at No. 20 and SCAD receiving 59 votes (30th overall). Here's a look at the top six teams in the Sun Conference rankings (with last year's record):
1. Embry-Riddle (44-14)
2. Warner (37-18)
3. SCAD (39-23)
4. USCB (33-21)
5. St. Thomas (24-34)
6. Webber International (25-31)
The Sand Sharks open the season Feb. 6 with a noon game against Benedict College, and their first conference series comes a week later when No. 20 Warner visits for a three-game series Feb. 12-13.
