"The Twilight Saga: New Moon" and "Bruno"
IN THEATERS
Out today is what is claiming to be the most awaited movie of the year, “The Twilight Saga: New Moon.” Now to some readers that will be a false statement, but to more, it will ring true. At this point, it would be pretty difficult not to know about Stephenie Meyer’s ridiculously popular books telling the story of a young girl, Bella Swan, who is in love with vampire, Edward Cullen. The first movie, “Twilight,” was released at this time last year and went on to make close to $200 million dollars in the U.S. alone. It was only days after its successful release that it was announced that “New Moon” had been greenlit for production.
Well it’s been a long wait for a lot of people over the past year, and the day has finally come. Regardless of what critics are saying about the movie at the moment, it’s already a success. Fandango, the popular online Web site that sells advance tickets in order to avoid lines at the theater, already has released a statement claiming the film has sold the most advance tickets ever. Let it be no joke that people are serious about this. I think it even gives the Harry Potter crowd a run for their money.
The midnight shows Thursday night that the studios cleverly put in place sold out all over. Some theaters even added a couple more late night showtimes to accommodate more people just for those to sell out as well. And if you were one of the lucky towns to have the first movie be shown again right before “New Moon,” it as well didn’t have to worry about filling seats.
And for those that need a summary, which most obviously do not, the story continues as Bella’s (Kristen Stewart) 18th birthday arrives. Some vampire chaos goes down that makes Edward (Robert Pattinson) fear for Bella’s life and he soon takes his family and leaves town. Without her true love, Bella is lost, depressed, angry and has little else to live for. She however finds comfort in her friend Jacob (Taylor Lautner) with whom a relationship soon begins to form, and things start looking up. The only problem is that Jacob has some hidden secrets. Secrets that rival those of her vampire friends ...
So as far as how the box office is gonna look for this one over the weekend, it’s safe to say that no other movie has a fighting chance. In fact, I feel kind of bad for the other movies being released. I think we all know that anyone going to the movies this weekend is going to see “New Moon.” Now whether or not you are being hog-tied and dragged into that theater is beside the point. The fact of the matter is, if you aren’t a fan, then you know someone who is and chances are, you very well might be accompanying them regardless of your own interests.
So box office prediction? I am gonna take a wild guess here and predict around $105 million for it’s first weekend. Yeah, it sounds crazy, but so is the popularity with this series. The first one brought in about $70 million it’s first weekend and the interest in this one seems much bigger, so the chances of it reaching the $100 million mark in just a few days aren’t out of reach in the least. “Twilight” fans, get ready. Everyone else, step aside!
ON DVD
Out this week is the comedy, “Bruno.” After Sacha Baron Cohen shocked audiences in 2006 with “Borat,” he’s back as Bruno. His character is a flamboyant, Austrian fashion guru who has disgraced his homeland, lost his TV show and now is coming to America to reinvent himself. Bruno is inserting himself into the most random of situations that he can find, in efforts to try and fit in and gain some popularity in the states. The only problem is that Bruno is quite the individual, and his personality doesn’t gel too well with those that he encounters leading to hilarious and awkward situations.
So in a nutshell, this movie is ridiculous. It’s shocking and offensive, but at the same time, entertaining on such a strange level that you almost forgive it. Well some might forgive, others might just walk out. It’s not even so much of a movie as it is a hilarious documentary of the Austrian’s attempts at trying to fit into America.
If you were able to brave “Borat,” then you should be fine with this one. At least you will know what to expect and how to brace yourself before it starts. Once again, it’s entertaining, but on a very weird level. You won’t know whether to laugh or cringe during many points of the film, but when the credits roll, you might find yourself having been oddly amused. You already know if this is a movie for you or not. If you’re debating it, then go ahead and skip it. Otherwise, you’ve found quite the unique film experience.
