Condition of Burton shooting victim still unknown
Officials at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston declined Tuesday to release information on a 49-year-old Burton man shot last week defending his wife.
Last reported to be in critical but stable condition, the man’s status is still unknown after he was shot Oct. 29 at Laurel Village Mobile Home Park in Burton. His name is being withheld, pending the arrest of his alleged shooter.
The victim’s wife told deputies that she had been sitting outside talking with some friends when a silver Dodge Caravan sped past her home. About 25 minutes later the van returned to the area, at which point she yelled at the driver to slow down as children were playing in the area.
The driver, later identified at Devon Jamel Ward of Beaufort, got out of the van and confronted the woman.
The woman said Ward began hitting her in the head and knocked her to the ground. When her husband came to her aid; Ward pulled out a handgun and shot him before driving away.
Ward has yet to be arrested.
The victim was taken to Beaufort Memorial Hospital before being transported to MUSC.
Ward is wanted on charges of assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature, assault and battery with intent to kill, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a violent crime.
Anyone with information about Ward’s possible whereabouts is asked to contact either Investigator SSgt J. Hiers at 843-470-3439. Ward's last known address is 41 Franklin Drive in Beaufort.
Ward is a black man, about 6-foot, 210 pounds with short dreadlocks and multiple tattoos on both arms. He should be considered armed and dangerous.
