Beaufort High standout Justin Parker selected to Shrine Bowl and All-American Bowl
The rosters for this year's Shrine Bowl game were released Thursday and it comes as no surprise that Beaufort High's Justin Parker, considered by many to be the state's top linebacker prospect, was among the fortunate 88 players selected.
But Parker got another bit of good news on Thursday morning when Eagles coach Mark Clifford told him that he had also been selected to the 2010 Offense-Defense All-American Bowl. This celebrated all-star game pitting 88 of the nation's top high school seniors in a East-versus-West format will take place on January 2 at Coastal Carolina University.
"I'm really excited," said Parker, who has 99 tackles (including nine for loss), five sacks, one interception and a blocked kick this season. "It's sometimes hard to believe because coming into high school, I never thought I'd be the football player that I've become, so I thank God for putting me in this position."
The 73rd annual Shrine Bowl, which pits the top players from South Carolina against the best from North Carolina, will be held at Wofford College's Gibbs Stadium on December 19 at 1 p.m.
Parker is the fourth Beaufort High player in as many years to be selected for this prestigious contest. In 2007, defensive lineman Devin Taylor and linebacker Brandon Mattis were tabbed for the roster and last season, defensive back Jimmy Legree made the team. Taylor and Legree are now teammates at the University of South Carolina.
