IN THEATERS

Out today is the next installment in the Saw series, “Saw VI” Audiences have been under Jigsaw’s spell since October 2004 when it all began. The terminally ill mad-man (Tobin Bell) has for years been on a mission in forcing the worlds murderers, cheaters, drug addicts, etc. to appreciate life and not take such advantage of such a precious gift. So torturous traps of all kinds have been erected and Jigsaw’s victims have been thrown into situations, sometimes with others, sometimes alone, in order to make the decision of whether to shed some blood to escape the traps or face a certain death. Some have escaped, but most have not.

Now having been dead himself since the end of “Saw 3” due to his disease finally taking his life, he has picked certain individuals to carry on with his plan of cleaning up the streets. Blood has been shed and screams have been heard. Detective Hoffman (Costas Mandylor) is now Jigsaw’s new apprentice and was the one responsible for the past set of deadly traps. Having once been on the case working to stop the chaos, he’s now crossed over and is carrying out his bosses wishes.

The FBI is now on his trail and is beginning to suspect he might be the one they are looking for so he once again sets traps into motion which then is said to reveal Jigsaw’s grand scheme and the long awaited reason for everything.

So if you’re one of the few who haven’t jumped on the Saw train at this point, then it’s probably not for you. With this sixth installment being released, it’s clear that there is quite the fan base for the series to still be alive. While it’s always been gruesome and gory, the series has always had a certain appeal to it due to the fact that after each installment, more and more pieces of the story become connected. More flashbacks are seen and more characters are introduced that all point the audience closer to what Jigsaw’s true purpose is.

Whether or not this is the last installment, well let’s not count on it. Each one seems to make plenty of money and each of them haven’t had any problems with being at the top of the box office after their opening weekend each year. Eventually the story has to come to an end, but only when Hollywood says so.

ON DVD

Out this week is the Sam Raimi horror flick “Drag Me To Hell” Christine Brown (Alison Lohman) has got a great life. She’s young, has a faithful boyfriend (Justin Long) and is a candidate for a big job promotion at work where she is a loan officer at a bank. Things take a turn though when an elderly woman comes in one day begging for an extension on payments for her house. Determined to make a good impression with her boss showing that she is able to make tough decisions and deserves the promotion, she denies the woman’s plea.

Unfortunately, this was the wrong woman for Christine to upset. The woman puts a spell on her and is soon haunted by ghosts, sounds, etc. basically making her life a nightmare and now has just three days to find a way to break the curse before she is sent to a fiery world of unimaginable horror for the rest of her life.

This one got overwhelmingly good reviews by critics when it was released over the summer calling it a fun and frightening horror movie. And while it was a fun/scary horror movie, it was also goofy and cheesy. And for a PG-13 rated movie, it got away with quite a lot of nasty stuff, most of which was over the top. If you can make it past that, then you should have a good time with it and it should provide good Halloween entertainment. It might not have been Sam Raimi’s intention, but it definitely came off more gross than scary. Still, it was fun to watch in a very mindless kind of way.
