Local Halloween events for dogs (costumes and silliness encouraged)

Halloween isn't just for kids and witches. There are several spooky celebrations for dogs and their devilish owners. I've put together a list of some fab-boo-lous local events where dogs in costumes reign supreme. Look for me and Penny at Wag-o-Ween this Saturday, dressed to kill (or at least make you laugh).

Wag-O-Ween 2009, St. Almo (Savannah’s True Animal Lovers Meeting Others)
WHEN: Noon to 5 p.m. Oct. 24
WHERE: Downtown Savannah, beginning at Canine Palace, 618 Abercorn Street
WHAT: Wish you could take your pup trick-or-treating? That’s what Wag-O-Ween is for. Over 80 businesses in downtown Savannah will be giving out dog treats to pups in costume. A map of the participating sites is available for a $5 donation.
Proceeds benefit the Humane Society of Savannah/Chatham County.

A Howling Halloween, Chain Free Beaufort
WHEN: Noon to 5 p.m. Oct. 25
WHERE: Hemingway’s Bistro, downtown Beaufort’s Waterfront Park
WHAT: The Halloween party will include a canine costume contest (1:30-2:30 p.m.), silent auction and raffle, activities for children, burgers and hot dogs ($2, noon-3 p.m.) and dogs available for adoption (1-3 p.m.).
Proceeds benefit Chain Free Beaufort, a non-profit organization dedicated to helping chained dogs.

WHERE: Outside Tail-Waggers in Coligny Plaza, Hilton Head Island
WHAT: Costumed dogs can compete in different categories for prizes.

WHAT: Prizes for best dressed.
