Parris Island plays starring role in new recruiting ad

Some familiar sights serve as the backdrop for the Marine Corps’ new recruiting commercial, which premiered during national college and professional football broadcasts this weekend.

Titled, “America’s Few,” the commercial debuted Saturday during the Florida-Tennessee college football game on CBS and is “an authentic portrayal of what it really takes for America’s youth to answer the highest calling and earn their place in a line of Marines that stretches back 233 years,” according to a Corps news release.

J. Walter Thompson Productions, a New York-based production company produced the spot, spending nearly a week filming the commercial at Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island in June. It shows recruit training “like we’ve never shown it before,” the commercial’s creative director told The Boot, the base’s newspaper.

In a news release, the Corps touted the commercial’s authenticity and effectiveness at capturing the essence of 12 weeks of Marine Corps recruit training.

The ad features no actors – all of the primary cast members are active-duty Marines, according to the Corps. “All scenes depicted are authentic portrayals of experiences that every recruit endures as he attempts to earn the title of United States Marine.”

The three Marines cast in the commercial to play recruits were Lance Cpl. Oscar Franquez Jr. of Canyon Country, Calif.; Lance Cpl. Benjamin Lee of Tulsa, Okla.; and Lance Cpl. Martin McCallum of Freeport, N.Y.
