Former Clerk replaced on state advisory committee

S.C. Supreme Court Chief Justice Jean Toal has replaced former Beaufort County Clerk of Court Elizabeth Smith on a state panel of county clerks and registers of deed.

In an order Toal signed last week, Dorchester County Clerk of Court Cheryl Graham will replace Smith on the Judicial Department’s seven-member Clerks of Court and Registers of Deed Advisory Committee.

The committee, led by Clarendon County Clerk of Court Beulah Roberts, provides advice and recommendations on potential improvements to the administration of the Offices of the Clerks of Court and Registers of Deeds of South Carolina to the Supreme Court.

Smith had served on the panel since December 2006, according to an earlier court order.

Smith resigned as Beaufort County Clerk of Court on July 30 after being indicted on embezzlement and misconduct in office charges by a Beaufort County grand jury the same day. Jerri Ann Roseneau was appointed by Gov. Mark Sanford to serve the remainder of Smith’s term, which expires in November 2012.
