Help for injured birds just a phone call away

A young osprey fell from its nest Friday on Fripp Island and, after a coordinated rescue effort, was on its way to the Center for Birds of Prey in Charleston within an hour. The bird died the next day. But Pete Richards of the Fripp Island Audubon Club said the incident serves as a reminder that help for injured birds of prey is only a phone call away. “It’s important that people pitch in and call someone if they see an injured bird,” Richards said. “With a little teamwork, all kinds of good things can happen.” The osprey was almost ready to fledge when it fell from a tree near the third green at the Ocean Creek Golf Club at about 6 p.m., Richards said. Fripp Island naturalist Collins Strickland came to look at the bird and then called Richards. Richards then contacted the Center for Birds of Prey and met with a representative at a designated drop-off location at Gardens Corner. By 7:15 p.m., the bird was on its way to Charleston, Richards said. The osprey had two broken legs and didn’t recover from its injuries. But that won’t always be the case, Richards said. “The center has a large facility and talented people who are great at rehabilitating the birds and sending them back out into the wild,” he said.
