USCB hands out awards
It’s a slow news day (not really, but the U.S. Open got monsooned out) so I figured I would fill you in on USC Beaufort’s spring sports awards. The baseball team handed out some honors after an exceedingly successful debut season in which they went 33-21.
Freshman center fielder R.J. Neal was named the team’s most valuable player after leading the Sand Sharks in a number of offensive categories and covering tons of ground in center.
Neal hit .367 (72 for 196) with three home runs, six triples and 15 doubles. He scored 42 runs and drove in 44.
Junior left-hander Jared Campbell was named the team’s pitcher of the year after compiling a 3-4 record and a team-best 4.30 ERA in 73 1/3 innings. He struck out a team-high 47 and walked 21. Campbell is pitching in Hawaii this summer.
The “Spoon Award,” so named in honor of Jim Spooner, a former player and coach who Sofield counted as a close friend, went to Nolan Fuller and Zach Rossetti.
Fuller, a freshman middle infielder who is affectionately known as “Norm” to his teammates, made his mark on the basepaths, scoring six runs as a courtesy runner or pinch runner and coaching first base when he wasn’t on base. Fuller also was the baseball team’s representative on USCB’s All-Academic Team.
Rossetti, a junior infielder, was one of USCB’s most consistent players, starting 52 of USCB’s 54 games at either third base or shortstop and providing a great glove and a solid bat. He hit .342 with three home runs, two triples and 13 doubles. He scored 40 runs and drove in 34.
ALL-ACADEMIC TEAM
The USCB athletics department selected one representative from each sport to make up its All-Academic Team. The honorees were:
- Baseball: Nolan Fuller
- Men’s golf: Eddie Stahlhuth
- Women’s golf: Adriana Saavedra
- Men’s track/cross country: Frank Tinsley
- Women’s track/cross country: Rachel Ford
