Hilton Head Island juniors capture state tennis championships
Three Hilton Head Island juniors came away with singles titles at the 53rd annual Wachovia Palmetto Championships, a prestigious junior state tournament that wrapped up Friday in Belton and Anderson.
Jared Woodson was perhaps the most successful of the bunch. He won the boys 14 singles division Friday after pairing with Joel Roberts to win the boys 14 doubles division on Thursday. Woodson, seeded second for the singles portion of the state tournament, defeated Brent Lett in the singles finals in straight sets. Woodson, who will be an eighth grader next year, trains at Van Der Meer Tennis Academy.
Second-seeded Molly O’Koniewski upset top-seeded Alex Martin to win the girls 18 bracket. And Leyla Erkan won the girls 16 singles division with a victory against Meghan Blevins in the championship match. O’Koniewski, a rising junior, and Erkan, also a rising junior, both train at Smith Stearns Tennis Academy.
The tournament was named both the South Carolina and the Southern Junior Tournament of the Year in 2008.
