Keeping an eye on the Major League Baseball amateur draft

Posted in

It takes a real baseball junkie to find a good reason to stay glued to the interwebs for all three days and 50 rounds of the Major League Baseball amateur draft, especially considering these guys won't see the big leagues until at least next season (with the possible exception of No. 1 overall pick Stephen Strasburg, whose 103 mph fastball could probably help the woeful Washington Nationals right about now).

But I've found a reason to keep an eye on the draft tracker at MLB.com. I'm keeping tabs to see if any USC Beaufort players or local high school players get the call. So far, nothing on either front, but the first Sun Conference player did come off the board a while ago, as the Chicago Cubs picked Edward Waters third baseman Joseph Thomas in the 10th round.

Several players from the University of South Carolina, Clemson and The Citadel have been picked, along with one player from USC Sumter and a pitcher from Effingham County (Ga.) High School. I'll keep my eyes peeled for more local connections, and I'll share them on Twitter at http://twitter.com/uscbsharkbites, so follow @uscbsharkbites for more updates.
