Corps to launch online encyclopedia

The Marine Corps will launch its own online encyclopedia next month, giving Marines access to information on more than 150 topics, including weapons systems and land navigation, the Marine Corps Times reports.

The project, dubbed “Corpspedia,” was the brain child of Capt. Mike Regner, a project officer at the Marine Corps Warfighting Lab in Quantico, Va.

Regner said he created Corpspedia after being tasked with figuring out why Marines were having trouble with land navigation.

“In the process of doing all that, I had that ‘ah-ha’ moment,” Regner told the Marine Times. “Wouldn’t it be nice if the Marine Corps had its own Google? Marines are already doing this, but they’re doing it out in Wikipedia. They’re doing it in other places. There’s finally an alternative.”

The Web site — which goes into testing next month at the School of Infantry-West at Camp Pendleton, Calif. — will be a much smaller version of its civilian counterpart and will consist largely of training materials.

Corpspedia will feature information on topics including weapons systems, offensive and defensive tactics, heli-borne operations, close air support, crew-served weapons, Combat Hunter and land navigation. All of the topics, Regner said, will be managed by designated experts.

“What we’re trying to do is put down vetted information in here,” Regner was quoted as saying. “We don’t want this to become an alternative to the right way of doing things.”

The general public will not be able to view Corpspedia as the site will only be accessible through Navy-Marine Corps intranet accounts.
