Helping service dog foundations

After hearing the story of a local family whose seizure-alert dog was euthanized after spending six days in a county shelter, Okatie Elementary School wanted to help.
The school is hosting a fundraiser Friday to raise money for organizations that help families find service dogs.
Apache was an 11-year-old Australian shepherd who served 11-year-old Faith Lamiroult, who has seizures daily. The dog would put her paw on Faith or start barking just before her seizures. If Faith was not close to something to sit on, the dog would walk behind her to serve as a cushion in case she fell, and start barking to alert her family.
Apache went missing May 14. After days of searching, the family called Beaufort County Animal Control and Shelter, where they learned Apache had been euthanized just moments before.
Jamie Pinckney, principal of Okatie Elementary School, read about Apache and wanted to help Faith. She’s allowing students and teachers to wear jeans to school on Friday if they pay $3. Pinckney said all proceeds will go toward a service dog foundation or organization of the family’s choice, or to help the family purchase another service dog. The school is trying to raise at least $2,000.
To contribute, make checks payable to Okatie Elementary School, 53 Cherry Point Road, Okatie, SC 29909. For more information, call 843-322-7700.
