Shark Bites live: USCB baseball vs. Embry-Riddle in the Sun Conference Tournament
We're going to try this live chat thing again this afternoon, as USCB is set to take on Embry-Riddle on the second day of the Sun Conference Baseball Tournament. The Sand Sharks need a victory to stay alive in the double-elimination tourney after a tough 3-1 loss to Savannah College of Art and Design last night.
When I talked to USCB coach Rick Sofield last night, he was leaning toward giving freshman right-hander Jorge Olmo the start today. Olmo shut down Embry-Riddle in the one game the Sand Sharks took from the Eagles during the regular season, and the Eagles are much better against lefties because of their right-handed heavy lineup. With that said, Sofield said it's a situation that calls for "Johnny Wholestaff" to take the mound, because there's no sense saving anyone for tomorrow when there won't be a tomorrow if they don't win today.
I don't know who the Eagles will throw, but the Sand Sharks can take solace in the fact they won't see Embry's top starter (Justin Zinkovich, who started Sunday) or its top reliever (submariner Aaron Varnum, who pitched 3 2-3 innings to get the win Sunday).
That's about all I know for now, but I'll be back a little before 3 p.m. to launch the live chat. Hope to see you then.
