Chasing Gators
A 10-foot alligator in a lagoon of a condominium complex on Hilton Head Island is now a popular reptile on Facebook and MySpace. Some call him "Big Al." Others call him Norm.
He wandered to the lagoon probably in search of a mate, and so far has been happy with his new location. Property managers have a permit to kill him if he becomes aggressive. For now, he's not posing any threat to people or pets. The only intimidating aspect of his nature, is his size. The thing to remember is never to feed alligators. That's what makes them aggressive. Joe Maffo of Critter Management, always says "A fed gator is a dead gator."
So keep that in mind as you observe nature. If your interested, you can become the gator's friend on these social networking sites. On Facebook, search for "Norm Hilton." He already has about 140 friends! On MySpace, go to www.myspace.com/normthegator.

Also, I haven't quite introduced myself properly. My name is Liz Mitchell and I am the health and environment reporter for the Island Packet.
I've been fortunate for the past year and a half to learn what living in the Lowcountry is all about. I hope this blog will help you do the same or enhance what you already know.
Check back here every week for updates on health and environment issues, what residents are concerned about and how you can help keep your area clean and healthy. If you have any questions or suggestions, please feel free to e-mail me at lmitchell@islandpacket.com.
