The leaders will be teeing off in a few minutes, and judging by the low scores some players are posting early, it will be interesting to see how Brian Gay plays with the three-shot lead he takes into the final round. Conventional wisdom would suggest Gay should play conservatively, but birdies are more abundant on the front nine, so if someone does make a run at him and he finds himself needing birdies on the more treacherous back nine, things could get rather interesting.
Many a lead has been lost on Harbour Town's back nine, particularly when the late afternoon wind blows in off the Calibogue Sound. The closest follower is second-year PGA Tour player Tim Wilkinson, who hopes to become the first left-hander and the first New Zealander to win the Heritage. He is accustomed to playing in wind, but he is not accustomed to playing in the final group -- the only other time he did so on the PGA Tour was at the 2008 Sony Open in Hawaii, where he entered Sunday in second place and finished tied for 25th.
A handful of major champs are chasing Gay, as well, including Lee Janzen, Todd Hamilton, Davis Love III and Tom Lehman, so if Gay holds on and wins, he will have done something. Let's hope for an exciting finish.
Happy Heritage,
JJ
