Because I know how to admit when I'm wrong -- horribly, embarrassingly wrong -- I figured I would pause here at the halfway point of the 41st annual Verizon Heritage and take a look back at my pre-tournament attempt to pick the winner.
And boy, were they bad. Of the 10 guys I tabbed Thursday as my favorites to slip into a tartan jacket Sunday, only one -- perennial contender Ernie Els -- has a legit shot at winning, as he enters the third round tied for 13th at 3 under, six shots off Brian Gay's lead. Among my other nine picks, none finished under par for the first two days, and two missed the cut. Blah.
Here's a closer look at my "Ten Who Can Win," including where they stand through 36 holes:
10. Camilo Villegas -- T36 at even par.
9. Spencer Levin -- T65 at 2 over.
8. Paul Casey -- T48 at 1 over.
7. Rory McIlroy -- T48 at 1 over.
6. Brett Quigley -- T65 at 2 over.
5. Steve Flesch -- Missed cut at 5 over.
4. Ernie Els -- T13 at 3 under.
3. Vaughn Taylor -- T48 at 1 over.
2. Jim Furyk -- Missed cut at 3 over.
1. Tim Clark -- T36 at even par.
