What to watch for Friday at the Heritage

The second round of the Verizon Heritage is under way, with 131 players (Joe Ogilvie withdrew because of an injury yesterday) trying to slip in under the cut and earn a paycheck (except for Beaufort amateur Mark Anderson, who isn't eligible for a payday -- but still wants to stick around for the weekend). Thursday was a bit uneventful in that Alex Cejka went out in the second group of the day and fired a 7-under 64, and nobody caught him. The winds swirled in the afternoon, and no one could post a score better than 3 under par in the later rounds.

Oddly, the forecast calls for the wind to die down a bit in the afternoon today, so the same group of players could benefit. That's bad news for the guys who are out there now, including two-time defending champion Boo Weekley. Boo shot 2-under 69 yesterday, matching his first-round score from a year ago, when he made his move with a 64 in the second round. We'll see if he can get it going today.

Also keep an eye on Anderson, who teed off at 9 a.m. He shot a 3-over-par 74 yesterday, the victim of a bad three-hole stretch in which he made two bogeys and a double bogey, so he will need a good round today to make the cut, which at the moment is projected to fall at 1 over par. Bear in mind no reigning Players Amateur champion has made the cut at the Heritage, so it's not easy for an amateur to waltz in and solve Pete Dye's maddening layout.

The biggest mover so far in the early wave is 2001 champion Jose Coceres, who is 3 under through nine, but he shot 3 over yesterday, so that just gets him back to even. Shaggy-haired Charley Hoffman has picked up two shots with birdies on his first two holes of the day to get to 3 under for the tournament, so keep an eye on him as he makes his way around the course.

We'll keep you posted with updates here throughout the day, so check back often, and if you're looking for more frequent blurbs, follow me on Twitter at twitter.com/justinjarrett.

Happy Heritage,
