Heritage: "The beer is cold and the sun is shining"

Harbour Town has come alive today, as the 41st Verizon Heritage finally teed off.

"I imagine it's going to get fairly cranked up tonight," said harbormaster Nancy Cappelman.

That's when The Headliners are scheduled to play, kicking off more of a party atmosphere as the tournament progresses.

"We’re having a blast,” said Scott Johnson, a 43-year-old tourist from Atlanta, who had stopped to have a drink with friends at the 19th hole. “The beer is cold and the sun is shining.”

Amen, my friend.

Things had been pretty sparse for the first couple days of practice rounds and the Pro-am, but today seemed just as busy as during better economic times.

The island — and the golf course — look absolutely stunning on television today, especially the shots from the MetLife blimp and the player interviews on the 18th, which have the tall ship in the background. As the chamber would say, you can't pay for this kind of national publicity.

Spent much of the afternoon following a hometown player, Mark Anderson of Beaufort. He had a heck of a lot of people following him (especially for an amateur). He had a decent start, but missed a couple birdie putts and bogeyed three in a row, including a double-bogey on #1. Would be a great story if he can make the cut tomorrow. He's going to have to start working the greens better if that's going to happen.

One longtime Heritage spectator told me that just as many companies have rented homes and are having parties. They're just in cognito this year ... no formal invitations, no banners, just good times for those who are in the know.
